92 Confirmed Dead in Norway Attacks

The bombing and shooting in Norway is a tragedy. 92 people confirmed dead at the hands of single (so far) gunman Anders Behring Breivik. The Times calls the deadliest on Norwegian soil since World War II. The Economist wrote

Relative to Norway’s population, the two attacks taken together are of a similar magnitude to the September 11th hijackings in the United States.

Authorities at first suspected radical Islamists. That the perpetrator is a 32-year-old Norwegian right-wing extremist makes this unlikely.

It seems Breivik made his own bombs as well by registering a farm that allowed him to purchase large quantities of ammonium nitrate fertilizer. The bomb he made was powerful enough to kill seven people and blow out every single window in a 17-story building across the street. But it gets worse.

Afterwards Breivik disguised himself as a police officer, went to nearby Utøya island, and opened fire on 600 youth as they attended anti-racism workshops, seminars, and sports. Children as young as 16 were killed. Many tried desperately to swim across the river before being gunned down in the water. Some survived by playing dead beneath the bodies of their friends.

None of the news reports say whether Breivik suffered any injuries while being captured. Unless he unequivocally surrendered himself by laying down his arms, I would think police officers would at shoot to maim in order to prevent him from killing more.
